Where the Money Goes
American Jewish World Service's mission is to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease among poor people in developing countries regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through grants to grassroots organizations, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS fosters civil society, sustainable development and human rights for all people, while promoting the values and responsibility of global citizenship within the Jewish community. AJWS has done this work since 1985 and is currently working in 35 countries with nearly 400 grassroots groups.
Money raised will be sent directly to American Jewish World Service (AJWS), which since 2004 has been providing humanitarian aid and engaging in U.S.-based education and advocacy to end the crisis in Darfur.
Funds we raise from the 2nd San Diego Walk for Darfur will help to support several projects in Internally Displaced Camps in Darfur that work with women and children, all victims of trauma, in a variety of educational, psychological and social programs. These programs are as important as providing them with food, water, shelter and security.
Funds from AJWS will support Child Friendly Spaces that provide a safe space for young people to receive psychosocial support in response to trauma as well as participate in informal education, sports and recreational activities. Additionally, the project will support women IDPs, who make up the majority of camp residents. AJWS will fund an organization that will maintain and expand Women's Centers, with the aim of providing women with the opportunities to develop social networks, be involved in adult literacy programs, and be encouraged to develop leadership skills. Through these centers, the organization will coordinate sports and recreation activities, promote hygiene practices and provide training in psychosocial support. It is estimated that up to 25,000 children, youth and women will benefit from these essential services. The total cost of this project is $190,000.
All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law; American Jewish World Service (AJWS) has received tax excempt status as a publicly supported organization as provided by the International Revenue Code under section 501(c) (3) and the California Revenue and Taxation Code Section 23701(d).
For the seventh straight year in a row, AJWS is the recipient of a four-star rating from Charity Navigator in recognition of their excellent record of fiscal responsibility. They also have an "A" rating from the American Institute of Philanthrophy. American Jewish World Service is also a BBB Accredited Charity.
